What’s Ahead Dec. 30: Christie, Iowa Democrats focus on Romney

Mr. Vice President?  Gov. Chris Christie, who was asked by Iowans to run for the Republican presidential nomination, will campaign in Cedar Rapids today – not for himself, but for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The New Jersey Republican will be at the Spring House Family Restaurant, 3980 Center Point Rd. NE , at 1 p.m., to stump for Romney.

To be clear, Romney won’t be at the event. He has no events scheduled today, but will be on the Iowa campaign trail again Saturday. He’ll be back in the area again at 4 p.m., Jan. 2 for a rally at Pate Asphalt in Marion.

Christie also will be making appearances in West Des Moines and Dubuque.

For the record, Christie told Politico.com that while he and Mitt Romney have never discussed a potential vice presidential role for him, he said it would still be “presumptuous” for him to turn his back on the possibility.

Meanwhile, the Iowa Democratic Party will precede the Christie appearance with its own event. Rep. Tyler Olson, D-Cedar Rapids, will do the honors, talking about Romney as well as Democrats’ grassroots organization effort ahead of the caucuses.

What’s more, the party said, “Romney made clear this week that anything short of a decisive win would be a loss.”

Romney was asked whether finishing second after Rep. Ron Paul would still be a win.

“Uh, no,” he said.

A late entry: Just in time for the caucuses, a group of conservatives not satisfied with the current state of the Republican field  is asking Iowa caucusgoers to write in House Budget Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.
