DES MOINES – Iowa 4th District Rep. Tom Latham on Friday released the results of a two-week online poll of 2012 Republican presidential candidates his campaign offered at www.onlineiowastrawpoll.com.
And the winner is … Texas Congressman Ron Paul, who captured 44 percent of the more than 6,000 votes cast in an online poll, according to Latham’s campaign office.
The next closest competitor was Georgia businessman Herman Cain with 16 percent, followed by Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachman with 10 percent.
The real balloting by GOP activists will come on Saturday during the Republican Party of Iowa’s presidential straw poll (www.iowagop.org) that takes place at the Iowa State University campus in Ames. That highly watched event is considered as an early test of a presidential candidate’s organizational strength in Iowa, which hosts the first-in-the-nation caucuses – tentatively scheduled to take place next February.
The results of the Latham campaign’s online poll that included announced candidates and unannounced possible GOP contenders were as follows:
1st – Ron Paul 44 percent
2nd – Herman Cain 16 percent
3rd – Michele Bachmann 10 percent
4th – Rick Perry 8 percent
5th – (tie) Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney 5 percent each
7th – Sarah Palin 4 percent
8th – “Someone Else” 3 percent
9th – Rick Santorum 2 percent
10th – (tie) Jon Huntsman and Newt Gingrch 1 percent each
