U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, and a 2012 GOP presidential hopeful, has received the Gun Owners of America’s highest honor, the “Defender of the Second Amendment Award.”
The announcement comes just ahead of the Iowa GOP Straw Poll Aug. 13 in Ames where the Paul campaign hopes to make an impressive showing.
“Many politicians claim to be pro-Second Amendment and pro-gun ownership, but more often than not their voting record says otherwise,” said Larry Pratt, GOA executive director. “In Ron Paul’s decades in government, he has been an unwavering champion of the Second Amendment by introducing legislation protecting gun owners’ rights – and their privacy.
“A lot of ‘gun-friendly’ members of Congress have bad Second Amendment votes. Ron Paul does not,” Pratt said.
Established in 1975, GOA is a highly effective Second Amendment organization that performs Constitutionally-observant gun ownership advocacy and public education on behalf of its 350,000 members.
Earlier this week, the Paul campaign announced the formation of the national “Gun Owners for Ron Paul” coalition to energize voters who value their Second Amendment rights.
“Rep. Ron Paul has justly been dubbed a champion of our Constitution,” said Ed Dolan of Central City. “While other members of Congress traded their integrity to get votes for pet projects, Ron Paul earned the nickname ‘Dr. No’ for his unwillingness to abrogate the Constitution.”
Dolan is a Gun Owners of America life member, a patron member of the National Rifle Association and an Iowa Firearms Coalition life member.
Paul earned a perfect 100 percent score on the National Association for Gun Rights Presidential Survey after being the first survey respondent, and a perfect 100 percent score on the Iowa Gun Owners Presidential Survey. He maintains an “A+” grade from the uncompromising Gun Owners of America and an “A” grade from the National Rifle Association.
Recently Paul, a Texas congressman, re-introduced legislation to repeal the federal Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA), which he called misguided legislation that has the unintended consequence of leaving schoolchildren and adults vulnerable in or around schools in instances where a gun is used in the commission of a crime.
“Ron Paul has been a staunch defender of the Constitution for his entire career,” said Tim Pugh of Cedar Rapids, a small business owner, founder of the Cedar Rapids Tea Party, gun owner and sportsman. “Gun owners and sportsmen have a clear choice in this election if they want to preserve their most fundamental right – and that choice is Ron Paul,”
